WordPress has a few new themes this month that really stand out. One reason is about their aesthetics. The other reason, even better, is about their purpose. The noteworthy themes are: Strand, Bedrock, and Nook.
Looking good
Strand is clean and minimal, which I like a lot. It sports a distinct accent color throughout; pick your favorite. Bedrock is an impressive riff of Minecraft. One option is a more yellow-orange color-way that really catches my eyes. And Nook has some nicely distinct widgets.
These themes also feature a classic sidebar for things like a blogroll or tag cloud. While made with the block-based site editor, the new themes somewhat resemble old-school ones. I still prefer the Classic theme system, but new ones like those above could convince me to try and accept the site editor, though I think it’s still too complex.
Aiming well
What’s most noteworthy to me about these themes, though, is that they are all described by WordPress in the announcement as blogging themes. They’re designed with a focus on the purpose of blogging - not website building, not selling products, not brand showcasing. Just good ol’ fashioned (personal) blogging.
This is cause for gratitude because it shows WordPress is not forgetting the humble blog. I like how the new themes plainly consist of a main column for posts and a sidebar of meta stuff, all for the sake of sharing your thoughts with other netizens. Quaint, simple, yet no less important.
As social media declines, blogging remains an integral part of the web. It’s great to see WordPress continue to embrace and promote this.
