Stardew Valley Impression

I’m only 21 game days into it but am having a lot of fun in Stardew Valley. I left my cubicle job for Loblolly Farm, my new home and way of living. Resources abound, there’s lots to do, people to meet, and things to learn.

The game strikes me as a blend of Minecraft and Animal Crossing (with Harvest Moon of course, but I only played that a short while, something like decades ago).

It’s like Minecraft with similar tools, items, and resources for farming, mining, and crafting — imagine! But it’s also like Minecraft in that it’s a PC game: similar sound effects and mouse/KB controls — I’m accustomed to playing Nintendo Switch games. Also, yeah, there’s exploring, which I love to do in a game world, fighting, and foraging.

It’s like Animal Crossing with people (animals, sentient bipeds) to talk to and form relationships with — relating. I’m pretty sure there’s cooking. There’s fishing, which is tricky to learn so far. And there’s buying and selling goods and resources.

I haven’t really made any friends yet, but a stray cat showed up at my place. Looks like an orange tabby. I named it Leo and now it sleeps on my bed sometimes. Also, I’ve given some flowers to different gals of the town. My house now has a furnace. As for the mines, my deepest level so far is 14.

And…there’s already much to do! I’m already hooked on the rewarding gameplay loop. I can see myself enjoying this game for a good long while.

Yes, so far the game is cozy and casual with a great soundtrack. And I love how I can play for one 24-hour in-game day while it only takes about 20 minutes of my real-world time. That’s great for a busy IRL dad of five sons with a full-time job.

Funny thing is that my day job has me sitting at a computer in a “cube-farm” most of the week. And I live on a homestead with goats and chickens. Stardew Valley basically mirrors my real life (though I don’t fish, or mine…I do “craft”).
