On My Way To Stardew Valley

Lately, I’ve had the urge to play Stardew Valley (finally). After being on my wishlist for years, I bought it a few days ago and am half-eager to get into it and half-afraid it will suck all my spare time away (as if zombie scrolling a social algo-feed doesn’t already do that to some degree — side-eyeing Threads).

Why the urge?

It looks and sounds cozy and casual, it’s successful and popular, and it just got a big new update like 8 years after its initial release!

To top if off, I learned on the developer’s website that it’s a type of RPG! And other sites talk about its RPG elements. I get that it’s not like a JRPG with an epic story and battles, but it’s more than just a farm-simulation.

“Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG!”

On one hand, I should probably just stick to Animal Crossing: New Horizons on my Switch. But I’ve put in hundreds of hours there already and want to try something fresh that’s also on my portable 13” laptop (more on that in my next post).

While I was stoked to see Stardew Valley is RPG-like, I’m more interested in the cozy/casual part. I’ve been pushing through Star Ocean: Second Story R and am almost finished with it. Now I feel like slowing down and changing things up.

Based on reviews and related info, Stardew Valley sounds very special, like it definitely deserves a try. So I want to give it some of my time and attention; I hope to enjoy many hours of fun and immersive escapism. At least for a while.
