Happy June, y’all. Feels like Summer time is underway. It’s been a busy season for me already. My brain hasn’t been able to engage hobbies lately; I’ve been super focused on work.
I started my new job in May and now work longer hours than before. Being new, my mental faculty has been absorbed by orientation, training, and onboarding. My basic tasks are the same overall but done in some different ways. I’m focused on learning the ropes and ramping up quickly to meet the first tight deadline.
Great news: overall, I’m truly lovin’ my new job.
On top of that, my new job start coincided with my wife being out of town to house-sit for relatives. That left me with more house chores to do. So my hobbies took a hit. Blogging slowed and gaming paused.
But yesterday, gaming resumed, thanks to…a brand new video game! SEA OF STARS.
I had anticipated this game for maybe a year. It first released last September 2023 — but digital only. I chose to wait for the physical version, which at first was slated for early 2024. After pre-ordering the exclusive collector’s edition for Switch way back in January, it finally shipped this week, arriving at my house yesterday, May 31st!
The collector’s edition includes old-school swag: a color paper map and poster, decals, an actual physical instruction booklet inside the Switch game case, and a slip cover for the case. Nice packaging and loot!
What about the game itself?
I played a bit over an hour — so far it’s fun and delightful. The art style is gorgeous, with lush fantasy colors, pixel-art, fluid animation, and modern lighting that somehow blends seamlessly with the pixels. It’s sort of a different take on the HD-2D style by Square Enix. I love how the colors and environments glow and pop off the Switch OLED screen (playing this game in hand-held mode is super).
Anyways, that’s a little of what I’ve been up to lately. Times are busy and robust with good things. In addition, my oldest son graduated high school and turns 18 next week! It’s…hard to pin down my thoughts and feelings on that, but it’s great for sure.
Blessed with better than I deserve, I’m grateful.
