Recently, I dusted off my Kindle and resumed enjoying a good book that I had digitally shelved months ago. It’s called, “Pure Invention”. Now I’m reading an eBook called, “The Paradox of Choice.” How have I found time for all this reading? I paused YouTube for 20 days. And thanks to severing my brain from the sticky tendrils of its video vortex, I’ve rediscovered the blessing that is my Kindle Paperwhite — especially in the black of night.
eBook benefits
Every time I’ve tried to only eRead on my phone or tablet, I return to Kindle. And every time I pause games and videos in favor of books, I rediscover both the joy of reading and the Kindle. Surely, other eInk-based devices are also very good. It’s just that I long ago invested into Kindle (Amazon had first-mover advantage).
I love the benefits of single-purpose eReaders: eInk for easy reading in any light, weeks-long battery life, small and lightweight handling, few or no distractions, and a front/side light (versus a backlight) for less eye-strain.
The best feature of all is an eReader’s intrinsic simplicity. Since my Kindle has a single purpose — book reading — it’s a refreshingly simple device to use. The act of reading itself is one of life’s simple pleasures. Kindle helps me enjoy that (okay, it sincerely kindles my love of reading).
On my newest Kindle, I’m especially loving dark mode.
Enlightened in the dark
One of my favorite times to read is at the end of the day when the kids are to bed. The house is still, quiet, and dark. I’ve had my cleansing shower, then I get comfortable. Velvety blanket, fluffy pillow, soft memory-foam mattress, and my eReader.
The Kindle’s dark mode is awesome. It allows the front light to be super dim; my eyes detect zero glare. It doesn’t bother my wife slumbering next to me. I can quietly read until my eyelids are too heavy with sleep. My previous Kindle Paperwhite lacked dark mode. While it allowed me to read with a low gentle light at night, it wasn’t nearly as dim or as convenient as dark mode is. With a black bezel and black “paper” screen, the only thing visible are the glowing words floating in front of me. It’s truly one way modern tech makes reading better or more accessible.
Color me eager
As great as the current Kindle Paperwhite is, there’s one thing I’m waiting for Amazon to do that will get me to insta-upgrade to “The Next Kindle.” Color eInk. Oh yes: color highlights, color book covers, and maybe I’ll even try comics/manga. Also helpful would be color “tags” on book covers to more easily distinguish between a sample, owned, or downloaded book.
Until then, I’ll keep enjoying my current Kindle and reading. What’s more important than the next good eReader is the next good read.
