After posting about my struggle to balance the use of my MacBook and iPad, a fellow blogger replied likewise in a blog post and wrote to tell me about it.
"Man, I totally get Jason's struggle. I've been going back and forth on this for years!"
"I feel like the way to end this back-and-forth is to just pick one and get rid of the other. But then I'm stuck – which one do I keep? "
There are two things to note about this.
First, the blogosphere still works. Bloggers are blogging like it's 1999, twenty-five years later. No social media here. People can still write online and respond to other people without even using a comment section on a blog. We just post replies as new posts and use hyperlinks — those things are handy tech bits.
Second, it's good to know I'm not the only one who struggles to juggle devices. I may not need both a laptop and a tablet, but like Loren, I like both and enjoy using both at different times. It's just that I sometimes prefer one over the other and lean into it. But that leaves the other device neglected, which seems wasteful.
Again, too, it seems simple to just pick one. But then I may be "stuck" with it and miss the other one. I think for me, the reality is since I like both, I'll always want each one to varying degrees at different times.
As of now, I'm finding that my M1 iPad Air in an origami case works surprisingly well for typing with just the on-screen virtual keyboard. So I might end up trading my M1 MacBook Air for an M2 Mac mini at some point. That way my desktop device is a Mac and my laptop device is an iPad. I can use both. And with the Mac mini being physically tied to the desktop, I'd be sure to use my iPad more as the mobile gear it excels as.
