How Apple Can Reinvent The iPhone

In 2025, Apple can easily reinvent the iPhone. Forget folding screens. Apple doesn’t need to do anything crazy or fancy to catapult iPhone capability. While it’s adding buttons to the once button-eschewing device, it can and should add One More Thing. It’s time for iPhone to get a stylus.

No, I’m not kidding. Some low-cost Moto Android phones have a stylus. Some Samsung Galaxy phones have a stylus. All the iPads have a stylus. The iPhone can and should too.

A stylus for iPhone could simply be a shortened Apple Pencil. I’m sure there’s a market for it; I’d buy it. I really like handwriting and sketching on my iPad with the Pencil. So I’d love to have these powers on my iPhone too.

It’s likely better to write or draw on a bigger canvas, so the Apple Stylus/Pencil for iPhone could be a Pro Max feature or a Plus-sized iPhone thing. It’d be a way to help Apple upsell people to its larger phones.

That said, it’s not hard to write on an itty-bitty screen either. Way too long ago, I owned a Dell Axim X3 PDA (Pocket PC). It came with a “dumb” aluminum stylus for poking around the interface. In fact, it was required to operate the thing. I even pecked out words on the small digital keyboard with the stylus. I could also sketch and handwrite — it was fine.

Apple would not need to really “reinvent” the iPhone to increase sales. And it doesn’t need to spend billions on research and development to create a new must-have feature. All the company must do is simply use the tech it already has on hand — allow the Apple Pencil to be operable on the iPhone. That’s it.

Then the company would sell more Pencils and probably more iPhones too. Not all Android phones can or do use a stylus, so if every iPhone could suddenly be used with the Apple Pencil, then more Android folks would likely switch to iPhone. And developers could take advantage of it too.

Of course, this would likely lead Apple to make an Apple Pencil tailored for iPhone, one that’s shorter or more compact. It could MagSafe connect to the back of iPhone to charge. And if Apple really wanted to get whimsical, the iPhone Stylus or Apple Pen could be color-matched to new iPhones.

There it is. Apple can reinvent the iPhone with just a stylus. Write it down.
