Finally All The Things Are USB-C

A few years back, I wrote about wanting to have all my tech gear use the popular USB-C port. Why? Two vital reasons: simplicity and convenience. Now in 2024, I can finally say, “I have USB-C’d all the things.”

The last few of my Lightning or Micro-USB port gadgets were replaced or upgraded this year:
  • My JBL Go 2 bluetooth speaker was swapped with the Sony ULT Field 1.

  • My Apple Watch was traded back to Apple; I started using the analog Casio Forester instead.

  • My iPhone 12 Pro was placed on auxiliary status, with the Android Moto Razr 2024 as primary.

Replacing the speaker was overdue I think. I just hadn’t been ready to plunk down a bunch of cash on a new one while the old one technically worked. Of course, Sony’s gorgeous orange speaker totally changed my mind.

The Apple Watch was something I had already set aside for a time (pun not really intended but I’ll take it). While great for fitness tracking, it was otherwise overkill for my needs. It used a proprietary MagSafe puck-style charger and had been an extra thing to keep up with. Now I’m free of that.

The iPhone was the biggest and most surprising change of all. I thought I’d have to wait a few more years so I could afford a refurbished iPhone 15, which finally replaced Lightning with USB-C in 2023. But thanks to my generous loving family, I’m now rocking an Android phone; USB-C has been standard for a while now. Even my previous one (Moto G Power) way back in 2020 had USB-C.

Funny, both the speaker and the smartphone upgrades are gloriously orange in color. Love that! The watch replacement, well, Casio makes an orange one but I needed something a bit more neutral (thanks, cultural fashion).

So while many are being extra thankful in a season of Thanksgiving here in the USA, I’m very grateful – and celebrating – the fact that all my tech gear is finally blessed with the same charging standard. It’s super nice to take any of my gadgets (eReader, game console, laptop, speaker…) made by any company and plug them into The One Cable To Rule Them All. You can say it’s electrifying.
