Just before Christmas, I got to treat my wife and kids to a movie at the theater: Sonic the Hedgehog 3. What a fun film! I think it’s one of the best video game cinematic experiences there is. And apparently two Jim Carrey’s are better than one.
The film was entertaining: fast-paced, simple story, great voice acting (Keanu Reeve’s as Shadow was cool), awesome special effects and CGI, and a great dose of humor throughout. Somehow the movie balanced being light-hearted with dire or serious tones: peril, sci-fi stuff, and of course explosions.
There was a particularly touching or profound moment that was heartfelt and really made me think…something a character reflects on, which was established earlier in the story, and is now found with deeper meaning (I don’t want to spoil it). Of course, Jim Carrey was a fun spectacle with his classic zany humorous lines and comedic actions.
Yes, there are post-credit scenes; stay until the very end of all of them.
It was good to have fun with the family, taking them to watch a show on the big screen and kick off the holiday week. And yeah, I’d agree Sonic 3 is the best of the series so far. We plan to eventually buy the physical disc and will likely see Sonic 4 whenever it releases.
