Nintendo officially confirmed the leaks revealed the Switch 2 today, announcing it in a video trailer. Good news, the successor to the Switch is a Switch! It’s basically the same but bigger and better. The Mario company played it safe and kept it simple, all of which is smart. I predict the Switch successor will be a success.
The reveal trailer, more of a teaser, already has over 10 million views in less than 24 hours. Besides the new iteration of the hybrid console, also revealed was one new game: a new version of Mario Kart.
There really aren’t many new specifics or details, but Nintendo did point out the fact that most Switch 1 games will be playable on the Switch 2, both physical and digital titles. That’s great news. So many players have many Switch games already. And more are still forthcoming, like Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.
Besides learning more details, like will Switch 1 games look or play better on Switch 2, the question many people have is: do I upgrade now or wait for a special edition Switch 2? I think the answer depends on future games exclusive to Switch 2. If there’s a must-play title, you’re likely to get whatever is on the shelf that will let you play it. Period.
Other than the new Mario Kart, though, we don’t know about any other Switch 2 games; none have been officially announced. That should change by early April, when Nintendo is set to dive deeper into Switch 2 details in a Direct showcase. More waiting!
As for when the new system will finally launch — over 8 years after the Switch 1 launched — all Nintendo said was: 2025. As for the retail price? Nintendo didn’t say.
