The Switch 2 Must Wait

It's April, and the Switch 2 should be fully revealed tomorrow - fun! I'm sure it will be really cool, but it must wait. I still have several great Switch 1 games to play and finish.

Yes, Nintendo has already said that Switch 1 games will work on Switch 2. And we might learn tomorrow that not only can Switch games play on the successor, at least some might run with enhanced graphics. For example, I'd love to play Xenoblade Chronicles X:DE in 4K 60fps rather than 1080p 30fps.

But I won't buy a Switch 2 just for that. And I don't want to buy a Switch 2 with a mind to finish Switch 1 games on it. In reality, I'm far more likely to only play Switch 2 games on a Switch 2 since they're newer and better. So my unfinished Switch 1 games would continue to gather dust.

I want to try (I can at least try, right?) to be content with the Switch 1 I already have and my many great games left to enjoy on it before I upgrade. This will help ensure I finish playing the games I have paid money for.

Another thing this will help ensure is confirming the Switch 2 is worth the cost of upgrading in the first place. While I'm sure Nintendo's big reveal will "sell it," the Switch 2 should get out in the wild world of gamers for real-world play-testing before I commit or invest in it.

For example, will joy-con drift truly and FINALLY be fixed with the new magnetic controllers? And will there be enough new games that fully leverage the more powerful processor, enabling novel or much-enhanced gaming experiences? We won't really know until the Switch 2 has been available for a few months at least.

So the Switch 2 must wait. Until when, Christmas 2025? Well, no, probably not then; I have a lot of unfinished RPGs I want to sink into. And right now, I'm still fully enjoying Xenoblade X on my soon-to-be last-gen Nintendo console.

The Switch 1, after so many years, is still going strong. It's a fantastic system with countless fun games for it. I'm sure the Switch 2 will see similar success over time, which is great. But for me, the Switch 2 must wait.
